Ege University

Ege University (Ege Üniversitesi in Turkish) is a public university in İzmir, Turkey. It was founded in 1955 with the faculties of Medicine and Agriculture. It is the first university to start courses in İzmir〔There had been previous efforts by Rahmi Arslan Bey, governor of İzmir during the World War I years, and during the Greek occupation of İzmir, to build a university in İzmir, but the projects, although advanced, had not been brought to full completion and courses had not started.〕 and the fourth oldest university in Turkey.〔(1933'ten Günümüze Türk Yükseköğretiminde Niceliksel Gelişmeler | tarih = Nisan 2011 | erişimtarihi=30 Aralık 2011| yayımcı = Yükseköğretim ve Bilim Dergisi Cilt 1 Sayı 1 Sayfa 3 )〕 Ege University commonly ranks close to the top among research universities in Turkey.
Ege University in Bornova, a district of Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey and one of its principal industrial, commercial, cultural and tourist centers. Izmir is a city, which is a reference point in world history and in its intellectual present and future. Izmir city hosts four state and five private universities. Being one of the largest cities of the country, it provides ample cultural and recreational activities. The city is in the Aegean region near the seacoast and is very accessible with excellent road and rail links and an airport to national and international destinations.
==History==
By 1982, Ege University was one of the largest universities of Turkey with 17 faculties, 9 junior college-type schools and 8 institutes. That same year, part of the university was separated into a new university, Dokuz Eylül University (''Dokuz Eylul University''). After the division, Ege University had 7 faculties, 3 junior college-type schools and approximately 9000 students. It currently consists of 12 faculties, 7 junior college-type schools (with 4 years of curriculum), 7 vocational training schools (with 2 years of curriculum), 8 institutes and 26 research centers.
